The Sock Bun and the King's Crown

1.  The Sock Bun
Once you figure out the sock bun it is easy to do, but learning it is the trick and it takes practice, so first you need a sock.  We usually cut men's dress socks.  They seem to work the best.
Start off by cutting the toe off, about three inches up.
Roll it starting at the bottom.

It should look like a donut.
Start your high ponytail with the water spray bottle. Brush smooth
This takes longer than you think because you keep brushing until all the bumps are out.
Once it is smooth, hair spray all around.
Use a hair band for the high ponytail.
Tighten and brush out the ponytail.
Pull it straight up.
Put the sock on the end of the ponytail pulling the hair through the hole. This doesn't feel right, but it is.
Go about three inches down and wrap the hair around the sock and stick the ends under into the hole.

Then roll the sock, which will roll the hair.

Continue to roll, pulling from the inside out with your fingers.
Keep doing the same motion.
It should look like a donut from the top.
Continue to roll and pull.
At the end, roll and try to stuff all of the hair into the donut.
Roll it as tight as you can.
Pull the hair out underneath.
Don't worry if it isn't perfect.  You can't really tell and it still gives a great look.
Secure with pins.  I use at least 4 if not more.  Secure front, back and sides.

Hair spray the bun.
This hair do stays in pretty well.  It also is curly when you take it out because of the wetting down.

I just wanted you to see the morning after hair for the sock bun.

2. The King's Crown.

Spray down with water.
Do the same thing by smoothing and putting in a high ponytail.

Tighten and brush the ponytail.
Pull the hair around her head evenly.
It will be in front of her face.

I like to start in the back.  Grab three pieces of hair to start braiding.

After you have braided once, grab a piece from the left and add to your braid.
On the right just braid like normal  So you are only french braiding on one side and not the other.
this braid is loose on the left and tighter on the right.  The left will make the crown.
I make the braid on the left about 1 1/2 inches from the hair band. You continue to braid adding hair as you go around her crown.
The reason that you spread the hair out and in front of her face is so that you don't grab too much hair at once.  Try to keep the left pieces that you add to the braid evenly distributed, so that you have enough hair to finish the bun.

When you get back to where you started and all the hair has been used from the ponytail, finish the braid.

Add a hair band.

Lift the bun and wrap the loose braid around the hair ban.
Stick the end under the hair band. Put the bun back down.
This will also help the bun be more full.
Secure the bun with bobby pins.  I use at least 4 or 5.

Here is the morning after for the King Bun.  I did smooth and hairspray the hair back again up to the ponytail.  I did not brush the ponytail.

Three Hairstyles Starting With Katniss

1. THE KATNISS BRAID

Begin by parting her hair on the side.  This part is on the left side.
Begin french braiding on the side with the part, Let the part be your guide because the braid should be parallel to the part. ( For instructions on French braiding see The Elsa Braid. Lets Start at the Very Beginning....of French Braiding)
Make sure that you alternate grabbing hair from the top and the bottom until all of the hair is pulled up on that side.
At this point you turn it to a diagonal moving down across the back of the head.
Grab a piece  from the bottom.
Then grab a piece from the top/front on the other side of the part.
Continue alternating by grabbing hair from the bottom and from the front until all of the hair is braided in.
The french braid should end behind her opposite ear. In this picture it is her right ear.

Do a regular braid the rest of the way and add a hair band.
I usually do this one tight because it will loosen during the day.

2. THE KATNISS INTO A BRAID BUN

Pull the braid up over her ear.
Wrap around tucking the end underneath.
Use hair band  to secure.
Add bobby pins for extra support.
The finished product.

3.  THE KATNISS WITH A MESSY BUN

Take the braid and add an ouchless elastic to the end of the french braided part, right behind the ear.
Wrap it around once and then let the braid out so you have a ponytail.
On the second wrap of the elastic, only pull it half way to make a floppy bun with half of the hair.
Pull the hair from the bun out and around.
Take the remaining hair that is hanging and pull it up, around and down into the elastic under the first loop like the floppy bun (See Two Fast and Easy Hairstyles for long hair)
If you have longer hair, pull the ends through and make one last loop with the ends.
Pull the hair out and around to make it bigger on the bottom as well.
Add another ouchless elastic as you scrunch the bun.  It will go half way through both big buns vertically.
Add two or more ouchless elastic going across horizontally or diagonally or both until it looks how you like it.
Arrange some of the pieces to desired places.
Secure with pins.

Finally add an elastic to keep the base strong.
Arrange a little bit more and hairspray.

The final product.
